Four Garage Door Safety Tests Every Homeowner Should Run

A double garage door weighs 150 to 250 pounds and it moves over the space where children and cars pass every day. These four tests take ten minutes and they catch the problems that cause injuries.

1. The Reversal Test

Lay a roll of paper towels flat on the floor in the door’s path and close the door. It must touch the roll and immediately reverse. If it crushes it or keeps pushing, the opener’s force setting is too high. That setting is what stands between a closing door and whatever is underneath it.

2. The Photo Eye Test

With the door closing, pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should reverse instantly. If both sensor lights are not steady, they are misaligned or blocked — and a blocked sensor is also the most common reason a door refuses to close at all. See the full troubleshooting list.

3. The Balance Test

Pull the emergency release with the door closed and lift by hand. A balanced door moves smoothly and stays put around waist height. If it drops on its own, the springs are no longer carrying the weight — and the only thing holding that door up during operation is the opener, which was never designed for it.

4. The Visual Cable and Spring Check

Look at the lift cables where they wrap the drums and at the springs above the door. Frayed strands, rust staining, kinks or a visible gap in a spring all mean stop using the door and call someone.

Two Things Worth Fixing Immediately

Extension springs without safety cables. Older doors sometimes use long springs along each horizontal track. Without a containment cable running through the middle, a break sends spring pieces across the garage at speed. The cable costs very little.

A wall button mounted low. The control should be at least five feet off the floor, out of a small child’s reach, and positioned where you can see the door while operating it.
