Garage Door Remote or Keypad Not Working? Fix It in Ten Minutes

A remote that stopped working is usually a five-dollar problem. Work through these before assuming the opener failed.

1. The Battery

South Florida heat kills remote and keypad batteries in about a year, sometimes less in a keypad mounted in direct sun. If the LED on the remote is dim or does not light at all, start here.

2. The Lock Button on the Wall Console

Most consoles have a lock or vacation button. Pressed by accident, it disables every remote while the wall button still works normally. If that describes your symptom exactly, this is almost certainly it.

3. Reprogram the Remote

Find the Learn button on the motor unit — usually under a light cover, colored purple, orange, red, yellow or green depending on the model and year. Press it, then press the remote button within thirty seconds. The color matters because it identifies the security generation and which remotes are compatible.

4. Range Dropped to a Few Feet

This is interference, not a dead remote. The most common culprit is an LED bulb in the opener itself — cheap LEDs emit radio noise across the same band the remote uses. Swap in an incandescent or an LED specifically rated for garage door openers and the range usually comes straight back.

Other sources: a new router, a smart doorbell, or a neighbor’s equipment. Also check that the hanging antenna wire on the motor unit is intact and pointing down, not coiled up.

5. Keypad Will Not Accept the Code

After a battery change many keypads need reprogramming. Some models also require the door to be open when you reprogram.

6. The Receiver Failed

If the wall button works, remotes are freshly programmed with new batteries, and nothing responds, the receiver board is the likely fault. On a newer opener this is a repair. On an older unit it is usually time to replace — see how long openers last.

One Security Note

If your opener predates 1997 it likely uses a fixed code that never changes, which can be captured and replayed. Modern openers generate a new code every press. If you are still on fixed code, that alone is a reason to upgrade. More on our opener repair page.
